what is boyle's law?

boyle's law is an experimental gas law that relates to the pressure and volume of a fixed mass of a gas approaching an ideal gas when the temperature is held constant. this law is also known as the boyle-marriott law, named after scientist robert boyle, who experimentally confirmed and published the pressure-volume relationship. french physicist edme marriott later discovered the same law independently of boyle.

the law in modern formulas states that when the temperature of a sample of an ideal gas is held constant, the volume and pressure of the gas are inversely proportional.
